Offline, On-Demand, Self-Paced Course
How to Grow and Sustain Your Consultancy or Freelance Work in UK Higher Education
A reflective audio course for those already doing some consultancy or freelance work in UK higher education and now ready to make that work more strategic, more stable, and more recognisably their own.
Now includes a bonus lesson – a standalone, after-the-course extra on using your numbers as strategic intelligence, designed to be returned to once the main course is complete.
Is this course for me?
If you have already started working independently in the higher education sector and would like to move beyond one-off projects and reactive work, this course is for you.
You might be:
- Already doing some independent work, alongside another role or full-time, and ready to think more strategically about its shape and direction
- Finding that occasional projects are not building into the practice you would actually choose
- Wondering how to manage workflow, pricing, and visibility without it overwhelming the rest of your week
- Looking to diversify your income, or to develop offers you can deliver more than once
- Hoping for a steadier rhythm of work, and a clearer sense of where the practice is heading
The course is intended to help you take honest stock of what you have already built, identify what is worth keeping and what may be worth changing, and shape the longer term on your own terms rather than the sector's.
What you’ll learn
This is a self-paced audio course, delivered as recordings together with substantial downloadable worksheets for each chapter. There is no login and no learning platform: just material you can work through at your own pace, returning to whichever sections feel most pressing as your practice develops.
The six chapters cover:
Reviewing your current work, refining your niche and identifying the clients you work best with
Articulating your value clearly, and communicating it consistently across the places it lives
Building professional relationships, using LinkedIn without the discomfort, and sustaining a light-touch marketing rhythm
Diversifying your work through a portfolio approach, developing offers you can deliver more than once and thinking carefully about pricing
Managing your pipeline, planning ahead for the feast-and-famine cycles of the sector, and structuring your time and energy
Stepping back to plan strategically, thinking honestly about growth, and setting the boundaries that protect what matters
The course also includes a standalone bonus lesson, designed to be returned to once the main course is complete, on using your numbers as strategic intelligence: a quieter, more analytical lens to bring to the patterns in your own practice.
